Institutional Analysis

CSSP partners with local public systems to use the Institutional Analysis—a qualitative methodology—that identifies how institutions of child welfare or juvenile justice are not working as effectively as they can for families, with a particular focus on families of color. This analysis reveals features of structural and institutional racism—policies, practices, protocols, resource distribution, training, concepts, theories, etc.—and suggests practical strategies that communities and institutions can employ to address identified inequities.

The analysis can also serve as an organizing tool to improve coordination and working relationships among intervening agencies and the communities they serve. CSSP has primarily focused on the experiences of Black and Latinx children, youth, and families; families experiencing domestic violence; and children and youth who identify as LGBTQ+ or who are gender expansive.
