Consistent Health Coverage and Care: Supporting the Health and Wellbeing of Immigrant Families

January 9, 2026

A family sitting on a couch together waving and smiling at the camera.

Consistent health coverage and care are essential for the well-being of all families, and immigrant families are no exception. Yet despite their vital contributions to the nation’s economic, social, and cultural life, many immigrants and their families are excluded from health programs they need to stay healthy. Immigrant families face major barriers to getting and keeping coverage, on top of the challenges already faced by U.S.-born families. These include restrictive eligibility rules as well as practical obstacles that make accessing care difficult. This brief examines the policies that limit health coverage for immigrant families and the real-world barriers that block access to care. It also looks at how recent federal policy changes have made these challenges worse, and outlines an inclusive path forward, showing how policy solutions can ensure consistent, meaningful coverage for immigrant families and strengthen access to care for all families.
