OtherWords: We Need to Invest in Families. Project 2025 Wants the Opposite.

Chloe Medina, a mother of four in La Habra, California, published an op-ed in OtherWords that underscores the importance of public programs to support families and the positive impact of the expanded 2021 Child Tax Credit. In her op-ed, Chloe highlights how public programs such as Early Head Start, Head Start, and its Transition to Kindergarten program were instrumental in the development of her son, Diego, who has special needs. Chloe also shares how the expanded 2021 Child Tax Credit provided her with new opportunities to support her family.

“For the first time, we could afford to send our kids to enrichment programs like a summer day camp. And we had an easier time catching up on our utility bills, which air conditioning puts a lot of pressure on during the scorching hot summer. Most importantly, we had less stress and could be more present for our kids.”

Now that the expanded Child Tax Credit has expired and public programs are at risk, Chloe asks Congress to consider families’ needs in 2025 and beyond.

Chloe is a member of the parent advisory board of the Automatic Benefit for Children (ABC) Coalition, which CSSP co-chairs and fights for a permanent child allowance.
